Waterproof VS Weatherproof - what's the difference?
A car cover can never be 100% "waterproof". Even if a cover has the ability to keep water from coming through the cover, condensation can still get through the cover through a process called osmosis. There are also car covers that are "breathable". Breathable covers allow moisture to pass through the cover but also air, and the transference of air through the cover allows the moisture that is on your vehicle to dry faster than a non-breathable cover. Non-breathable covers will trap moisture on your paint finish, which can damage your paint, and in worst case scenarios: RUST.

Interesting Facts about Waterproof Fabrics
- Waterproof and water-resistant fabrics are any fabrics that can stop water or reduce the amount of water passing through the material.
- A rating system was developed to evaluate the many fabric options and how capable they prevent this water passage. To be deemed waterproof, a standard threshold is to resist over 1,000 millimeters of water pressure without leaking. High-end fabrics are often much higher than this.
- Another rating you may see is the breathability of the fabric. This is how much air and moisture exit the fabric.
- Waterproof means that no water can penetrate it. Water-resistant is a term more often used with porous fabrics that still need to remain breathable.
Seven waterproof and water-resistant fabrics:
- Wool: Highly water-resistant, fibers of wool are great at absorbing water. Natural wool has a thin coating of lanolin oil that makes the fiber water-resistant.
- Vinyl: Made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC), used in many iconic clothing items and accessories. Highly resistant to water but doesn’t hold up well to heat.
- Woven Fabric from ELS cotton: Extra-long-staple (ELS) cotton is a specially grown crop with extra-long fibers woven to create a very dense cotton textile. Result is an exceptionally waterproof fabric.
- Gore-tex: Invented in 1969, made from stretched Teflon. This fabric can be made incredibly waterproof and breathable.
- PU coated fabrics: Polyurethane (PU) coated fabrics are waterproof and breathable. They are often found in outdoor clothing and camping gear.
- Neoprene: Made from synthetic rubber, it is often used in wetsuits, laptop sleeves, and other protective cases.
- Hypalon: Made from Synthetic rubber, it is often used in inflatable rafts, kayaks, and other outdoor gear.
